To mark its 20th anniversary in 2019, Channel NewsAsia spotlighted 20 individuals across Asia whose imagination, talents and efforts have uplifted their local communities. We are proud to have our founder, Stephanie Choo, chosen to represent Singapore.
"I realised that this was something I wanted to pursue. This intersection of design and social good. So I left my previous role to look at starting a company... It was very clear to me it had to be a social enterprise.
I'm really proud of my artisans with autism. I'm proud of my artisans, period. They do incredible work. I see so much focus and courage in learning a new skill and seeing them work brings me a lot of joy."
"Things that require change are not easy for them. I need time to teach them, and I have to design what they are able to do. But the final product is worth it.”
"I think in Singapore, we want very much to be connected to our past... So taking elements of the old and creating it anew is something we find meaningful.”
"[Stephanie's] appreciation for Peranakan design goes beyond colours and patterns. Her label... is not a Peranakan brand, but rather, one that is inspired by the love of making that is part of Peranakan culture.”
"[Stephanie] seems to spend a great deal of time on perfecting the design of a small piece of jewellery... [She] keeps the design value of timelessness and materials close by. For that, she doesn't "work with trends"."
